The HMKW is institutionally accredited by the German Council of Science and Humanities. All programmes are also accredited by FIBAA, an international agency for quality assurance in higher education, which guarantees high academic standards. The university combines a solid academic education with practical projects in cooperation with industry partners such as Sony, Deutsche Welle and ZDF. The urban campuses are located in vibrant media cities. The Berlin campus is located in the central Mitte district, close to many media houses, start-ups and creative agencies. The Cologne campus is situated in the southern part of the city, 4 km from Cologne Cathedral and in close proximity to major media companies. The Frankfurt campus, which was added in 2016, benefits from the city's status as an international business and media hub.
A distinctive feature of HMKW is its emphasis on practical experience. Professors and lecturers have extensive industry backgrounds and help students build professional networks. The university's career service helps students find internships and jobs. Regular project weeks with renowned partners allow students to work on real-world challenges and present their results in online, TV and radio formats. HMKW offers both traditional 6-semester Bachelor's programmes and 8-semester dual study programmes that combine an apprenticeship with a university degree. The consecutive Master's programmes, some of which are taught in English, can be completed in 4 semesters full-time or 6 semesters part-time. HMKW’s practice-oriented approach and strong industry ties ensure that students receive the best preparation for successful careers in the media and communications sector.
